Biologically, humans are at the top of the food change, except for those rare moments when humans enter the sea, and then become part of the food chain. Humans also change most of the environment in a particular area to accommodate their needs for a sustainable life, at the expense of other living organisms. No other life on Earth can accomplish this task. But humans must realize that they are also animals and are subject to the life forces on the planet. As the human population grows at an exponential rate, and overpopulates a particular niche, nature will attempt to adjust the population back to a sustainable level. This will occur through warfare, famine, disease, and migration. I also think for those who are religious, the Bible proclaims that humans have dominion over, basically, everything. This also would explain false notions of superiority. If you don't believe me, try swimming off the Farallon Islands off the coast of California. We still don't have dominion over the great white shark, so to speak.

First you have to understand that the aim of any species in life is to survive, and pass it's DNA on to the next generation. Survival is a battle, and always one animal survives at the expense of another. If an animal did not think itself superior, there would be many problems.
If a wolf did not think itself superior to a deer, it would not hunt it, and it may well starve with the loss of that source of food. Self importance is vitally important it survival.
Imagine if sheep were deemed as important as humans, you would have people crashing cars into children to avoid a lamb in the middle of the road. Of course is it unthinkable to us that a child could be less important than a lamb, because of the way we have been wired by nature to think humans more important. If that was not true society wouldn't be able to run, and I don't think humans could survive, and would be replaced by an animal more able to exploit other animals.

Well, at least in christianity it is said that humans are made in the image of god. or something like that so there is a basis in religion for the belief. There is also our huge impact on the environment and that we cover most of the globe.
Humans analyse problems, find solutions and think about why.
One of my friends says we are superior because we contemplate the meaning of life.
personally i like the way douglas adams puts it unfortunatly i cant remember the quote but it was about the comparison between humans and dolphins. Maybe someone can help me out here.

Apart from the fact that we can reason and not put our hands in the fire a second time? None what so ever. Instinct, which most of life on this earth relies on has more to say about survival than anything else.
Lets face it, in the next century it will be a case of after me you come first, because we are slowly but surely destroying the planet we live on.

Because we run the world, we are the `intelligent` ones or at least we think we do and are. When other life forms are ready to take charge they will. I have a dog and there is absolutely no doubt who is in charge in my house, and it is not me. She lets me know when she wants feeding, when she wants to go out, when she wants to play. She chooses the warmest place to sit by the fire, in the winter and the coolest place to lie in the summer. She sleeps when ever she isn`t doing any of the above, she won`t move out of the way, I have to step over her. There are several TV programs she dosen`t like, so she will bark or howl if I don`t change the channel. Don`t be confused, my dog knows she is superior to me.

Because we are.
What other species can equal ours for caring for our infants and elderly. What other species spends as much effort into finding new and better ways to kill our enimies.
Seriously I believe that our ability to utilise technology to speed up our evolution puts humans above the rest. By using our technology we are able to survive in any part of the world, from sea to space, from desert to tundra must give us the edge over bacterior and rats who also have this ability.

Beats me. We will be lucky to do 200,000 years. The 'brainless' dinosaurs managed a few hundred million.
I don't see that intelligence, as used to fcuk up the world, has any survival potential.

How about the truth? God said He gave us dominion over the earth, the animals, the fowl of the air and creeping things. God said in the Holy Bible that we are superior, because He said so.
