I like AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)
And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

I use both Spybot search and destroy and Ad-Aware SE personal, and they work really well plus they are free. I see people say the AVG is good, well I tried it for myself and downloaded it and tried it out. It did not find one virus after two tries. Then I ran the ad-aware and viruses poped up. The I use spybot to check to see if ad-aware removed all the viruses and it did. I recommend Spybot and Ad-aware

The best anti-virus app is not AVG like most people thought. It has a very low virus detection. I know that because i've use it. The only anti-virus app i am using right now if Avira. You can get it here http://www.free-av.com >>>>>>>>>>>read all the reviews and compare for yourself.

Applications such as Spybot and Adaware search only for certain types of trojans and trackers.....not virus's.These should be used alongside an anti-virus program.
AVG and Avast are the best ones for VIRUS's...I use them both on diferent machines.

I agree with the previous answers about AVG, it's great! BTW don't fall for the "new updated version, subscribe now" warning that AVG is giving out to users - there's still a free updated version, but you have to hunt around on the AVG website for it, it's tucked away at the bottom of the downloads page.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:
