Go to a consignment shop -- you will find what you want for less than half what you would pay new. I never buy anything formal new anymore, and no one ever guesses. Since formalwear is usually only worn once, it looks like you paid full price.

debenhams has some lovely dresses and not ot expensive either or just look around top shop dorothy perkins monsoon there is quite a lot of shops with nice dresses at the moment.

If you have Oxfam stores or Sally Ann stores, you can sometimes find something inexpensive there or any other thift or charity shop. At the same time you'll be helping a local charity.
