Its a switch that mounts on the inside of the doorframe on the hinge side. Take your wire from your electrical switch and wire it to the switch on your door, but remember when you close your basement door and you are in the basement you'll have no lights. Something to think about if you have an annoying family upstairs.

You require a Sytem Similar to The Function on The Refridgerator Door...Many Types of Switches are available @ all Electrical stores, and it should be capable of sustaining the Voltage & Current Rating of Your Basements Lighting [If You mention This To Your Stockist I'm Sure he/she will Oblige].
However the Type of Switch in Respect of The " Mounting " has to be considered [The Most Convenient & Robust Place]

It's a simple switch, and some wiring. It's a button just like the refridgerator door, mounted in the door molding of the closet. My Great Aunt had these in all her closets but they would work anywhere. One note...be sure to shut the door or you'll end up leaving the light on! A simplier and cheaper answer might be to buy a clapper.

You can get a motion sensor that fits in place of your light switch (if switch is inside room) or just place on the wall. There are different kinds you can choose from. Or install a jamb switch which works like the doors in your car and fridge. You might need to hire a qualified electrician for these installations. Hope this helped
