I live about 2 hours away, and I would say it's a very beautiful and friendly place, and not as dirty and dangerous as the guy a few answers above me said it is. Most people on the strip are tourists and in happy, festive moods. The Fremont street light shows (old Vegas as I call it) is beautiful too. I've been to Fremont street several times, but finally saw the light show the other night for the first time, it is simply spellbinding! And if you want to get out of town for a day, the behemoth and historic Hoover Dam is only a half hour away, and that is a very spectacular site to take in (yes, it's also lit up at night lol)!
Please come visit Vegas sometime. You can also venture to my neighborhood a couple hours away and see Zion, Bryce Canyon, Great Basin, and Grand Canyon National Parks, along with Cedar Breaks National Monument and ski areas full of great Utah powder! If you're looking for nature closer to Vegas, the Valley of Fire state park is said to be very amazing (I haven't been there yet).
Las Vegas can't be beat though!

I lived there the last three years. It is definitely NOT as bad as some of these people describe it. Give me a fu*@in break! It's not Bahgdad. There are homeless -- but no more than any other large city. I've seen more homeless people since I moved out here to San Diego.
Certain areas of Las Vegas are dangerous, just like any other city. But for the most part, there are numerous planned communities all over town.
Outside of the strip, the city is just like any other city in the southwest, i.e, houses, strip malls, and more houses -- nothing special. Most locals stay away from the strip.
Although, you are constantly reminded your in Las Vegas when you go to a grocery store and there are slot machines inside the store. Same thing at car washes and convenience stores. That's no bull either.

I am disappointed by the appearance of Las Vegas during the day. In the daylight hours Las Vegas has to be one of the ugliest cities I have ever been.
However, at night when the lights come on and the city livens up, that AREA is certainly an exciting sight for the eyes. Just watch out of the passed out/drunken homeless guys on the sidewalk.

Better, so much better. If you go to the top of the Stratosphere, which is the tallest building/ casino in all of Las Vegas, you can see everything. We are in a valley surrounded by mountains and the lights just make the whole valley glow. There is so much color, a trillion lights, out front of the casinos there are free shows going on and beautiful things to just feast your eyes on. You can stand at a corner surrounded by the empire state building, then across the way a replica of the Eiffel Tower, then you see the Statue of Liberty which is exactly half as tall as the real one at the New York New York, then you look across the street to see a volcano erupting fire and lava water in front of the Mirage Casino. Walk about two casinos down and there is a live pirate fight with 2 giant pirate ships in a mini lake in front of the TI and they're shooting cannons at each other and sword fighting until one ship gets blown up and sinks! underwater. Then look next door to see the beautiful BEAUTIFUL Bellagio fountains shooting water hundreds of feet into the air in tune to music being played, mostly classical opera music. And lets not forget the Luxor, the giant blue glass pyramid that shines a bright white light from the top that's so powerful you can see it from space, with a sphinx in front of it. I've lived here my whole life, and whenever I go down to the strip, I still can't help but stare. Come visit us!

Vegas is a beautiful place to visit, go sight seeing, shopping, go on rides, gamble, and so much more. There are many beautiful casinos full of interesting things. My favorites are the excalibur ( a big castle) and the mgm grand. It's a great place for a vacation, lowsy place to try and live and/or raise a family!!

It is better in person. It is great flying in at night and seeing the city from the sky. AMAZING.
And as for the comment that it is ugly during the day, NOT true! The strip is beautifully done.
I love Vegas!!!
And I don't even gamble!

Well as lights are considered to be beautiful, otherwise we wouldn't put them on Christmas trees, and so from that standpoint it is a very pretty place. However if you like scenery. It has little or none.
