On July 5, 2006, Pitkin County sheriffs were called to a vacation house in Old Snowmass, Colorado, near Aspen, at 1:41 am. They reported that Ken Lay had chest pains and was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:11 am. Reporters have never reported which doctor declared him dead. For unexplained reasons, an immediate autopsy was required, and the county coroner was not available, nor any of the deputy coroners, so the body was immediately sent 128 miles away to remote Grand Junction in Mesa County for an autopsy that didn't’ occur until 2 pm the next day. There are several other county hospitals with coroners closer than Grand Junction, and the urgency was never explained? The autopsy indicated that he died of a heart attack brought on by coronary artery disease. Toxicology reports will be completed within two to three weeks.
This tale becomes more bizarre as Lay’s body is immediately transported to a funeral home and cremated before his funeral and before the investigation into his death had closed. Since Lay was out on $5 million bail secured by his children’s homes, one would think his wife might have contacted the local U.S. Marshals office so they could confirm Lay had truly died before he was incinerated.
