Because they are young and inexperienced and REAL life hasn't hit them yet. Oh and for about 4-6 years aliens take over thier bodies and screw with thier minds. It's ok though, the aliens eventually get bored and our kids come back. It can be a slow recovery but, generally we don't notice because we are just so happy to see them again.

Good question.
Prides of female lions reject their male cubs once the cubs reach 2 years old or so. That way they can go away and prevent inbreeding within the family. That's a gross but fascinating consideration. In fact, by going out and trying to live on their own it probably increases their chances of getting together with others and breeding in general.
In the context of culture, this striving for independence helps prepare the individual for further education and a life on their own.
