May not be the belt. I just had my FXDWG in the shop for the same problem, and it was only the intake gaskets. You were/are running too lean. I was looking at $1,200 for a belt and tensioner job. The mechanic I have just replaced the intake gaskets. A rattle is normal when you are warmed up. Took me a while to get used to the twin cam drive in the TC-88.

But, yes! Don't ride more than you have to ride until you stop the problem. I have only a bike for transportation, and if you let it get worse, it will cost more. When mine started to backfire and lose power, and "poot" when I let off the throttle I took it right in to the shop. Cost was $96.00 to replace bad intake gaskets.

You have resolved the problem yourself , Your engine is out of time and if it survives you will be lucky . You must rectify this as soon as possible before the engine self destructs with valves and piston heads colliding.

Try checking the exhaust nuts going to the motor. Make sure they are tight. and all there.
