I think unique names are great so long as they aren't:
1. Tough to spell
2. Tough to pronounce
3. Easy to make fun of

I think it's great to have a name that not every other kid in your class has. But when names start to get weird, like Godzilla Rodan, or spelled strangely or are too made up, then I draw the line.
If parents really love their children they won't saddle them with totally crazy monikers.
Plus, what I've discovered over the years is that often names I find attractive or a little out of the ordinary all of a sudden become the fashion (like Jason or Jordan, Sara with or without an "h" on the end, stuff from Shakespeare like Miranda).
Finally, if you're in a cross-cultural relationship, you have to be careful. A name in one language may not work in another. For example, I like names which can't be abbreviated so when I was pregnant one boy's name I really liked was "Zac" (NOT Zachary). My Dutch husband immediately vetoed it because in Dutch "zak" means scrotum! (We live in Dutch-speaking Belgium. Can you imagine what the poor kid would've gone through. So we had a girl instead!)

Unique names are fine but I would run them by friends and family first to see which names might be fuel for insults or other problems the child might face as he/she grows up.
There are a lot of unique names (and unique spellings of names) which are great. Then there are others which become the source of needless taunting and teasing for the child.
Just think the names through and you should be fine.
Good luck!

I think they are great. I went with unique names, however, what i thought was unique back in 97 is now so common he has 2 other in his class at school....name is Garret. I also have a Tatum, Anabel and an Aiden, which became popular in the vry short 19 months ago that i named him that. Oh well, i still love that name. ANyway, i like unique names, also old fashioned..i.e. Anabel Rose. I also like the easy to spell and easy to pronounce. I have also found that the names I picked my kids aren't make fun of. Hopefully it stays that way! Good luck to ya.

I agree with you, I love unique and uncommon names, but unique spellings seem like they would be problematic.
It's funny, when I was born, Sydney was very uncommon, but now, everywhere I go I run into at least one little girl with that name. I love how names go in and out of fashion just like everything else!

I'm all for unique names, only as long as it isn't too unique. By "too unique" I mean spelled weird, hard to pronounce, or names that are completely unheard of.
What is the deal with spelling your child's name differently anyway? I mean I can see if you want to change a letter or something, but these parents who change pretty much EVERY letter are ridiculous. For example, my name is Emily. I know someone with the same name who spells it Emilee. I think that's perfectly fine. However, I also know someone who spells it Emmaleigh and that is where I draw the line. You don't need to change the spelling of a name THAT much.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have to write my nieces and nephews names in my address book so that I spell them right on their birthdays and at Christmas or any time I give them anything. Unique is nice but sometimes they go overboard. We all call my one niece Nicki because we can't spell or pronounce her real name. Kanikakah.

I totally agree. I think that some uncommon names like Rory, Rylie,Savannah, and Camryn are okay. But when people spell names as simple as Rylie like Ryleighe are going to regret it when no one can spell there kids names right!

Our six grandkids all have unique names, but they are not "cutesy" and the spellings are not unusual. However, we can never buy them notebooks with their names on them, or anything like that. However, I do prefer their strong names to more common ones.
