It does get a little confusing.
Great Britain is an island. The countries making up this island are England, Scotland and Wales. Those 3 countries along with Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom. The whole long name for the UK is the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', which is how it reads on my passport.
This link should help clear up any confusion :)

England- from the original name 'Angle Land' home of the Anglo tribes that merged with the Saxons as they invaded the Isles of the Britons back in the 5th~6th century.
Britain- Home of the Britons who were pushed out of their homelands despite Artorius's military strategies. Britons were pushed into Wales (Saxon for 'dirt-farmer') and off the island completely into the area called Normandy (formerly known as 'Brittany' or 'Little Britain')
After the the Duke of Normandy wins at the Battle of Hastings the two 'Britains' were reunited. Eventually known as Great Britain or the United Kingdom later on after Scotland and Ireland were brought under English rule.

Though Britain has 4 parts:
1 england
2 wales
3 scotland
4 north ireland
people often accuse british governments of thinking only about england ( to be more precise - south england ). south england also has very high population compared to rest of britain. it means, south england is heart of britain.
hence people always get confused between the two.
