Good point BoltRock.... Back in the 50's the crime rate in Red China was out of control, their "rehabilitatin" philosophy was not working.. (surprise).. so in desparation they had a mass public trial of felons, then after the (preordained) guilty verdict they were immediately herded into an arena, tethered to posts, blindfolded (a nice touch) and then several military men went though them shooting each defendant in the head with a pistol, on LIVE nationwide TV... The bodies jumped and contorted and squirmed after the shot, blood squirting all over the arena.... all broadcast on live government TV for the entire population of The Peoples Republic of China to watch. The following year the overall crime rate for the entire country dropped over 75%..... Now THAT is a deterrant... and it WORKED (there... unfortunately it wasn't shown live HERE too). To answer... YES they most assuredly should be shown live to all.

Clearly the death penalty in at least some countries have been little deterrent but is it fostering justice? Justice can be so subjective and often these things get intertwined with revenge. I'm not on any side of the fence on this one but I'd lean towards being against it(the death penalty that is). Lets see what's wrong with the idea of watching someone being murdered publicly, well for a start it's generally not a very pleasant thing to watch and I can't understand why so many people could be interested or even entertained by such a thing. Killing someone no matter how legal isn't a small thing and I don't think it shouldn't be a must see item, these kind of displays degrade life in general.

The death penalty does not foster justice or deter crime, at least not in the USA.
For the D.P. to deter crime, the appeals process would need to be shortened to 6 months or eliminated all together.

Executions should be public....televised?????? probably not.
Executions for blatant homicide, child rape, should be carried out with in the hour after conviction by firing squad or a single executioner.
I will be among the first to volunteer as executioner

it is statistically proven that the death penalty does not deter crime. it is, however, for the victims, a sense of closure and justice. i do not believe in the death penalty, but, i could change my mind if i were put in a situation where i had to deal with something like that. god willing, i never will.

throughout history public hangings/executions were all the rage. it had to be stopped because of its popularity.

Let's all head back to the middle ages friends!

The death penalty neither foster's justice nor deters crime, it's just barbaric.

I can't conceive of why anyone would actually want to watch another human being die...who would make the choice to do that? No matter who the person is or what they did...who wants to see that?

Just the knowledge of execution is supposed to deter crime.
Nevertheless the countries executing the most people in world are Chine, USA and Iran. America is standing on the bad side of the world in this area!

You mean entertainment similar to barbaric days? Bloodsport?

For example:
Do you mean like they had gladiators slaughtering each other during Roman times?
Or Caesar putting men in an arena to be eaten by lions? Like Shadrac Meshac and Abednego characters in the bible?
Or public hanging after the pilgrims landed?
Or public burning at the stake - think Joan of Arc or the Salem hunt?
Or is it some other murderous act of violence wayyyy wayyy back when man was less civilized?t

I wonder why they stopped doing that?

Maybe because Satan is in anyone who loves that sort of thing.

i'm in want of it, and if somebody desires to video demonstrate an execution, i think of there could be a fashion for them to witness it. Torture, on the different hand, isn't something i'm in want of. a guy or woman must be convicted to be placed to loss of life, yet torture is used to extract counsel which will or won't be solid with a view to get a conviction. i do no longer in simple terms like the deterrent argument. no one commits a homicide thinking they are going to be caught. I do exactly no longer provide a rattling approximately protecting sociopaths who go around killing human beings alive.

why when the death penalty has been proven to not deter crime?

It used to be public, not so long ago in some places. Believe me, Friend, just watching the public in attendance was repulsive (to say the least) to any decent human being. Please think it twice over before spreading that kind of idea, and you'll do yourself a big favor.
