A lot of the "baby names" books and sites are inconsistent and so not very reliable.

I find "behindthenames.com" is one of the best on-line resources for these questions. So here's what they offer:

GRETA (Swedish, German, English)
Short form of MARGARET.

MARGARET
Derived from Greek μαργαριτης (margarites) meaning "pearl"

(In case this makes you wonder, the cocktail known as a "margarita" is derived from this name.)

And here is a whole list of names in various languages that are derived from "Margaret", from "Gretchen" to "Rita".

My name is Margaret too - it means 'pearl', or it has also been suggested it is derived from the Persian word for 'light'
