DALLAS TEXAS- is this a good place to live?

Dallas, the actual city itself, is not so great. For a town that's trying to be a world class city (example-that big bridge they want to build) it comes off as trying too hard. The cost of living is extremely high compared to Houston and SA. The downtown is giant office park with nice tall buildings but basically empty after 5 oclock and on the weekends. The suburbs on the northern fringes are very nice and clean but there's not much to do for fun. The city lacks any charm but it does fancy itself as a glamorous destination. I agree with a previous poster, there is a definite need of Dallas people wanting to show off money they don't have (foreclosures, highest credit card debt per capita, etc.)

Dallas is miserably hot during the summer we always have droughts. Either water your yard or your house's foundation will be damaged. There are 2 types of houses in North Texas those that have foundation problems and those that are going to.
Winter here is very mild. I almost never wear a jacket.
Like any major city traffic is a problem. The traffic here is better than Atlanta, but worst than most other cities.
Things to do notice everything people list to do here is pretty expensive. Except for the museums, which are poor for a city this size. This area has one of the largest foreclosure rates in the US. There is a very strong need to show off here.
Restaurants are almost all chains, most of the stores here are in most other cities.
As for something unique about Dallas, you can see where President Kennedy was killed.
As a friend of mine said there is no hook here, nothing to make you say this place is special. If you like outdoors stuff to do you will really hate it here.
The cost of living here is lower than most major cities. You do not pay city or state taxes.

I loved it, I miss it...I want to go back!!! Maybe in a couple of years my company will have a transfer position and I can go east....wouldn't that be wonderful??? There's a lot to do there, no the humidity is not what some of these people think it is. They should try Houston if they think Dallas is humid!! It's actually pretty windy a lot of the time, though. I never had one bit of trouble as far as this supposed "high-crime" city theory goes. Yes, there are parts that I wouldn't go to alone at night, but that's any big city. Actually, I have been in some of those parts of the city and no one bothered me. Most of the places I went I was alone, and never had any problems. If you look carefully, you can find decent, affordable housing. That's really the only thing that is higher as far as cost of living, simply because of the law of supply and demand. Don't let anyone put you off if you want to visit Dallas. Go and see for yourself and make your own mind up. As for me...I want to click my heels together and go home!!!

Yes! I been there before and their are lots of fun things to do there. It's no boring because it's a large town and in large towns there are plenty of fun things to do. They have zoos there and a Ripley's Believe it or Not museum there, too! I went there and it was fun. It's not hot. Well, to some people it would be if they were from up north, but me, being a native of Texas, I am used to it and I don't think it's hot there because I live more south of Dallas. I think it even snowed there once. If I could live there, I would!

Why does everyone keep saying no?? It's really not bad at all. I am sure it is not any worse than any other large city, it just depends on what area of the city you live. I have many close friends from the dallas area (Very nice suburbs!!) and they all love it. The only bad thing, from my experience is that it takes a while to get anywhere due to traffic, but I think that's the case in any city. I give Dallas a good review.

I love living in Dallas...the traffic though is horrid! You better live very close to your job or plan on a long commute every single day. There is something for you to do all the time. It really depends on you. The summers are VERY hot and the winters for the most part are mild. I came here from Iowa 13 years ago...and to me that first winter was the coldest winter ever for me because it is a wet cold. Dallas is great and Austin and San Antonio are very close to drive to for the weekend. I love living here.

I think it would be--been contemplating moving to the greater DFW for a few years. As far as the cost of living, I don't really see it as being more expensive than any other Texas City. As far as humidity, it is humid, but there are worse places.

There are plenty of higher educational opportunities, medical facilities and there seem to be plenty of jobs. Of course there is traffic, but no worse than most big cities. You just need to learn alternate ways to get around that does not include the same highway everyone and their brother wants to use.

As far as recreation, they have it all football, baseball, basketball, hocky, rodeo, nascar in the area. There are always concerts, museums, art galleries, zoos, and malls nearby.

I don't live there, but I travel over there every 3 months. Of course, any place you live in tends to lose some of its "fun" factor once you live there--if you let it. Most people think their towns are boring and that there is nothing to do--well, turn off your tv and get out there and you'll see things differently---of course there are those places where there really isn't much to do--Dallas--DFW is not one of them.

North Texas, not downtown Dallas. Absolutely!!! There is a ton of fun things to do here, there are jobs, good schools, beautiful lakes, goods and services up the wazoo, what more could you ask? Plus, the cost of living is acceptable.

I love living in Dallas. I was raised in Pleasant Grove, which ain't so great, but now I am in Lewisville, Tx. which is close, and it's great. The night life is diverse, the people are cool, for the most part, and there are lots of places to work.

i live in dallas and it depends on you!!!

we are loaded with every minor and major team possible, tons of restaraunts, nightlife galore, and medicore arts that are gaining momentum. oh yah, and we are the forth state with the most golf courses, lots of golfing and football. and best part, no snow!! we've hit 80 this december :p

IF you are an outdoorsy type,, you'll hate it here! unless you're up to driving many hours to see a less concrete environment. we are dead and dry 10 months of the year, little rain, very very hot, much humidity, most experience bad alergeis since we rarely freeze to kill anything, bugs, manmade lakes, no moutains, very flat, etc ...

there are nice parks and areas with greenery way way down in hill country.. but dallas is very metroplitan.. and an interesting place to live if you are a social butterfly type.
