Cinnamon. They HATE it, though I don't know why. Put it in the area where they are entering your home, and they will disappear. It will make a small mess when it rains, but I find that it's better than ants. Also, if you know where the ant hill is, put raw rice in the hole. Then, boil water and put it on top of the rice. The rice grows, and all the ants run out like crazy. Kill them all with bugspary right then and there, so they will never come back. Do it before it rains, so when it does rain, the bug spray will wash out a bit so it does not endanger pets/children. :)

Our bug man gave us an item he said you can buy in any home supply store. It is a little "house" made of plastic you stick under the sink and behind things, where kids and pets should not be going. Leave it there a week and throw it away.

I also heard that putting/growing mint around the house deters ants.

If you can find the nest either pour a kettle-full of boiling water into it or pour in a bucket of hot soapy water. That will kill the ants and it's safe for children, pets and birds.

Ants become a nuisance when they enter homes. Instead of spending money on costly pest control, you can get rid of ants by removing the food source and using soap water.

Try boric acid. You can get it at the coop, grocery store or WalMart. Sprinkle around the house, under the cabinets and near the ant home. IT WORKS!
