When opening the eyes wide as women do when applying mascara, the nasal passages can become stretched and more narrow, making it more difficult to breathe through the nose. Thus, women open their mouths to breathe and find that doing so stretches the skin under the eye making it even easier to apply said mascara. Ergo, women open their mouths wider for easier application.

At least, that seems like the most reasonable explanation.

Try putting some on sometime, and it'll become obvious: Opening the mouth pulls the skin under the eyes slightly, making it less likely that mascara will get on the skin.

When we open our mouths, our cheekbones actually go down allowing our facial muscles to relax more and open our the eye area... Also when we open the mouth, we also raise our eyebrows increasing the space needed to put on mascara...'cuz we don't want to get mascara on anywhere else on our face but our eyelashes

I do not open my mouth when putting on mascara. All my friends think that is weird but it doesn't go for everyone. I think some people just do it because they are relaxing there mouth and it just dropes.

the nerves of the mouth are somehow connected to the eyes, the wider your mouth is open the more your eyes will open...hence it is much easier to put on mascara. the same thing kind of applies with when we get surprised our mouths open and our eyes open as well.

To concentrate more, it's also a habit most women get.
Also if you notice when you open your mouth your eye stretches a bit so it will be easier to apply the mascara.

It works as a shock absorber. If you get hit when you have you mouth closed it creates a stronger blow and all girls know, any sort of movement when applying mascara leads to raccoon eyes. If you get hit with your mouth open, when your mouth closes it absorbs some of the blow.

I know, it's a funny one! As you widen your eyes to apply the mascara you simultaneously open your mouth, I don't know why, it just happens. Try it yourself and see!

Some of you guys are real mature ya know...Not all women do it. I do it because my lashes are long and I don't want to have mascara all over my face.... It makes it easier to keep your lashes away from your skin and makes it easier to not blink.
