Been to Disney earlier this month for the first time and did NOT go through a travel agency and stayed off grounds at a Best Western 2 miles away..SPENT ALOT OF MONEY..we are a family of 6 ...is it cheaper to do a resort package?

I also have a family of 6... and disney is never cheap, but you can save some $$$. If you check into a Disney resort, they generally have a max. occupancy of 4. For parties of more than 4 they charge considerably more. You could lie about your numbers and stay anyway... or stay at a different hotel. If you stay on property, and you tend to eat at the parks or hotel restaurants, you can save by using the Disney meal plan. We tend to save by eating breakfast in the room and packing fruit & water in a backpack. Also, you can buy no expiration tickets, and use them for more than one year.

If you're lucky. But it'll never be cheap; it's the biggest theme park in the world.
You don't need to check into a (to Disney World related) resort. You could check into a cheap hotel but then you ofcourse need transport to Disney World. When there, the buses are free (officially you need to have resort ticket, but there are no checks on that).

Maybe next time go to Legoland Carlsbad:
