Rock has gotten better with each decade, so I would say now.
But I'm a 60's kinda guy.

Rock n roll was best in the 70's. Pop was best in the 80's.

The greatest song ever written was "Layla" (Derek and the Dominoes) by Eric Clapton. The greatest album ever recorded was "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd. I could just keep going on and on about the great music of the 70's. I cant think of one good thing to say about the 80's. Evanescence is the greatest thing to come along since the 70's. Everyone else today sounds like Coldplay and Nickleback....or is that the same thing? Anyway, the 70's, thats my real answer.

I wouId have said the 50's and 60's but you didn't mention those decades, so I'll say the 70's. Rock n' roll was only 20 years old then so it was still new and fresh, now a lot of music seems to be just copying what came before it.
Having said that there's still some great music around now, like the White Stripes and Coldplay for instance. And some great musicians from decades ago are still making great music, like Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Paul McCartney.

Definitely the 1970s was the height of Rock-n-Roll. You had Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Queen, Jethro Tull, The Who, Pink Floyd and the list goes on and on and on and on.
