I grew up here -- it means "the Meadows". Just west of the older downtown area, there is a series of natural springs that is now called "the Springs Preserve". This is where the original pioneers stopped and camped on there way through the desert. Some stopped to stay and built permanent dwellings. Before long, the Union Pacific railroad built a rail station here, and in 1905, Las Vegas was incorporated as a town.

Hey hotod, the "City of Angels" is Los Angeles, not Las Vegas. And Las Vegas also means Desert Rose. Sting's song "Desert Rose" he wrote in retrospect about Las Vegas.

The (fertile) Plains. Vega means fertile, level, humid land. Obviously, the Spanish Conquistador who named the place was jesting.
