Well, they allow people to get around much quicker and more conveniently than walking, horses, and carriages did.

Evolution of transportation.

For a very long time people rode on horses to get around.

Then to transport several people and/or items at once, they devised a way to hook a wagon to a horse in order to carry them.

Once engines became a popular thing to use in factories and trains, someone decided he could put one into one of those horse carriages and not have to depend on the horse.

This became very popular over time as you could get your family around without having to even own a horse. Since the demand was high, many revisions and improvements have been made to increase performance. Hence we now have cars.
