I like Don Mattingly the best. I am shocked and appalled that no one has mentioned his name! While I am familiar with Jeter, A-Rod, etc. and I am very happy for our Yankee teams that have won Championships, I still am a huge fan of Donnie Baseball. He was a great player on the field and a great person off it. People were crying when he announced his retirement. Micheal Kay said "Don Mattingly was the most revered athlete in New York City". How can you call yourselves Yankee fans yet you don't know about Donnie Baseball? I have already mentioned why I am a fan of his. However, I will add that during the Old Timer's Day game at the Stadium, Don Mattingly and Yogi Berra got the loudest ovations. On August 31, 1997 his number 23 was retired. Suzyn Waldman said "He is the kind if person that you would want your son, father, brother or any other male in your family to be like". Not the exact words but more or less the same. He played hard no matter how injured he was. He wasn't greedy or selfish, and he never cheated. He is a great role model and lived a clean life. People much less ballplayers like him are rare to come by. I will always say that he is a great ballplayer, Yankee as well as a great human being that we could all learn from, and someone that we should aspire to be like.

How could you ask this question? With all the great ball players that have played in NY. Now there are that really stand out to me Yogi, Ford, Donny Baseball, Maris, DiMaggio, Gehrig, Mantle, Ruth, Jeter, Rivera, Larson, Cone, Clemens, Andy P. There are some players that have played for the Yanks that I would call the best. And most of them played before I was born (1980)

Derek Jeter. He has played his entire career as a Yankee and will probably take #2 with him when he goes and Joe Torre will
probably retire #6 so no one will ever wear a single digit number as a Yankee.

Whitey Ford was my favorite as a kid, then Mel Stottlemyre after Whitey retired. Then my all time baseball favorite & idol, Thurman Munson. After that I always pulled for Louisiana Lightning, Ron Guidry, & more recently (sort of), Donny Baseball.....Don Mattingly.
As a recovering Yankees fan, I'm not sure if any of the present day Yanks are truly worthy of putting on the pinstripes everyday except maybe Jeter & Rivera!!

My favorite Yankee player is Derek Jeter. He is consistent, displays a true profesionalism, personifies what it is to be a Yankee and should have been the MVP this year.
