I think environmental stress put on the human body over the course of decades will cause mass sterility and infertility world wide, after all solar radiation coming down to earth in more amounts than usual because of the damaged o-zone layer, and all the artificial stuff we put in foods, plus the slow poisoning of the water supply will eventually cause mass extinction in the next 40 to 60 year i'm guessing.

How to define the 'end of the world' though?
Its a tougher question than some people think -if you mean what will mean the end of human life or all life then its likely to be an asteroid strike. The chances of getting hit vary but given enough time - the chance of getting hit by a huge asteroid that could destroy all life (say 100 kilometres in diameter) are 100%. If we have technology to defend ourselves from that threat.
As for the destruction of the Earth, that might take longer. The Sun is going to turn in to a red giant star in about 6000,000,000 years but it will have blown off a lot of mass by then and so our orbit will be larger (maybe a 'year' 50 times longer than now) however the increasing proximity to our star will boil off all the oceans and melt the crust of the earth.
Nothing will be left living.

Yes it is certain, the sun will die, and become a red dwarf consuming all matter within its range. Thankfully thats not for a few million (maybe billion) years.
People have been asking this same question since the dawn of time and in each generation someone comes forward and names a date, because it makes them feel special or empowered. However our lifetimes a but a hairs width on the mount everest of space or geological time.

Hi Marc,
I like to think that a passing battlecruiser from another star system will accidentally pull out the mains cable that keeps our galaxy illuminated.
The earth will shutdown, accompanied by the standard Windows xp default theme tune,or even better, the 'That's all folks' sequence from a Warner brothers cartoon.
I know that it will be apocalyptic, but it should be fun,at least.
Happy new year.

Let us wax poetic and call on Robert Frost:
"Fire and Ice "
SOME say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
Robert Frost (1874–1963).

I say in 5 billion years the world shall end, when the sun expands and burns it up.

Global warming causing global hostile weather conditions or the Entire ozone layer disappearing and leaving the human race open to huge radiation doses from space
I give us a few hundred years =)

The absolute end of the planet Earth is when the Sun becomes a red giant and completely swallows it up.

I think that the US is going to pick a fight with a real threat by accident and get us all killed. But the end of the Earth itself is much harder. See http://qntm.org/destroy
