In the stage version isn't Effie the main character? Isn't the story about HER? Why is Beyoncee's character (NOT Effie) the lead in the movie?

It'd be great to get an answer from someone who has seen both!
Thanks!

They changed it so it would be a retelling and not so much a remake. The entire story actually did revolve around Effie though, as she was their start, the cause of their morale downfall and finally their redemption. They made great effort to make the movie fresh and new even for fans of the original. From most responses they did a great job. I also feel that their changes and "updates" made it more relevant for todays audience.

It was probably done that way for marketing. The media is so image concious. Some say it was a celeb thing where Beyonce and her people wanted more attention for her role (since Jennifer's songs were more powerful in the film since Effie is the center of the musical). Who's to say, More than likely it is a little bit of both. I am impressed by the musical and the movie. Don't worry though. The talent in the movie will speak for itself and marketing can't change that.

I was going to ask the some question. I am glad you did and your people gave some good answers too. I think, and agree with one of the answers above, that the talent in the movie is great. I have seen it twice and and have the sound track. The only thing I disagree with is that Beyonce is nominated for Best Actress and I feel like Jennifer Hudson should be best actress not best supporting. I feel like both of them were stars. Not supporting. But hey I am just a moviegoer!
