I have done as I have been told with all the answers I have been sent from my last question but still no luck, When I come to set up the printer on my network, the second computer just can't detect it. I have all the shared boxes ticked reinstalled the installation disc which came with the printer but still no luck. When I come to print from the computer that it's connected to it works fine. Any help would be great. Both computers are using XP one is Media centre other is home.

The second system should not "detect" it. Detection only works when the device is physically connected to a system.
* Find the IP on the system that has the printer hooked up to it:
* Click Start / Run then type CMD and hit OK. At the prompt, type "IPCONFIG /all" (no quotes) and hit enter.
* IP will probably be something like 192.168.1.1.

* From the system you want to add the printer to, open MY COMPUTER and in the address bar type "\\192.168.1.1" substituting your IP for the example (again, no quotes).
* You should see Printers and a Shared Documents folder.
* Double click on the printer and you should see the shared printer
* Right Click and then click Connect. Printer is installed.

First off unistall the printer program from the second computer. Then click on start>control panel>printers and faxes, when the printer and faxes window opens make sure the panes on the left hand side are not showing folders(it they are click on the x to close them) and click on the link in the pane that says add a printer and work your way through the wizards... the first page tells you about installing from a cd etc. just click on next, the next window asks if you want to use a shared printer or install a new one check the box for a shared printer and click next, the next window gives you the option of browsing for a printer or typing in the route yourself, click on the browse option and then click next and your next window should show what printers are available. If your printer isn't listed then go back to your other computer and double check that you have marked the printer as available for sharing.Once you have the printer in view highlight it and then click on install.

first you'll have to share the printer.
open any folder and from the menu bar click tools > options.
on the view tab scroll down to the last option which is 'use simple file sharing' and make sure that it's unchecked.
if it's not uncheck it and don't mind any messages. click apply and then ok.
then go to printer and faxes, right click the printer you want to share and click properties. go to the sharing tab and click share.
if you want you can leave the same sharing name.
click ok.
click start > run
write cmd and then press enter
on the cmd prompt write hostname and then press enter
the textbox returns the name of the computer on the second line
suppose that this name is computername

go to the second computer and click start > run
write \\computername
after a while
a folder opens
double click the printer and wait for a while until the printer is installed on your computer and then a window opens.
close it and start using the printer.

ok, let me give it a shot.
double check the the printer is shared on the local computer. once that is done, print a test page. the test page will give you the correct computer name, printer name and sharing permissions.
go to your second computer add new printer and select network printer. then on the menu select the Connect to this printer option.
type: \\computername\printername and the computer will find it for you and will display the option for you on a drop arrow menu, select the right one and click next and follow the rest of the menu, it is pretty simple. even if the computer doesnt give you the options, make sure you type the computer name and printer name exactly as the test page shows and in the format I used above.
\\computername\prtinername
good luck, email if more help needed.

Both computers have to be on and I think you need to have a folder shred on the one the printer is connected to. On the other computer Right click the connection and make sure printer sharing etc is checked there. Also go to My network places and access my documents on the other computer and right click a file and click print and see if it prints. The printer also has to be switched on!

Make sure both computers are in the same workgroup. To change the workgroup right click on My Computer and select properties. Select the Computer Name tab and change the workgroup on both computers to exacly the same.

Make sure file and printer sharing are enabled in both of the firewalls.

Install the printer normally on computer #1. goto control panel and select printers and fax. right click on the printer and select sharing. Select Share Printer and give it a name.

Now goto computer #2 and add a printer. Select network printer. then browse for printer and it will list all printers in your network.

Hope that helps....

Maybe oversimplifying, but the computer that the printer is connected to has to be up and running.
