If not, how can I retain colors in common fabrics.

Yes. I don't know about the dyes they make today, but for the longest time instructions on the dye packet would suggest I think it was half a cup of salt in with the dye solution, which was said to help "set" the dye in the fabric.

White vinegar works the best for retaining dye in fabrics.

Never heard of using salt but white vinegar can work. I did learn the hard way that fabrics from India always run, for the life of the garment.

to some extent it will. soak in salt and cold water

not really ,what it does is stop colors from running from the clothes
