I used to think that New Year's Eve was the poorest excuse for a celebration there was. What are our traditions? Getting drunk and watching the d*@# ball fall on TV? I would rather go to bed early.

HOWEVER, I started contra dancing about ten years ago, and, hokey though it is, I have more fun on any single New Year's Eve now than I had in my whole life before that. You get exercise, you drink only a little (who can dance when your balance is off?), you flirt, you eat good stuff, you sing "Auld Lang Syne" at midnight - loud and out-of-tune - and you hug large numbers of people who hug you back.

So, if anyone out there is missing 1) human contact 2) exercise or 3) laughter, find your nearest contra dance.

In contra dancing, there are no dance mistakes. That is, we make lots of them, but we just don't care. No one has to have a partner to be accepted, either - you just have to be willing to laugh and have fun.

I'll list good places to start looking for a local dance at the end of this post. The first entry is a national database. The second is my local contradance, where you'll find a good explanation of what this nutty stuff is. The third is the excellent wikipedia article on the topic.

As a member of the Baha'i Faith, my New Year's is the evening of the 21st of March. It's called Naw-Ruz.

So I won't be doing anything for the Gregorian New Year's Eve.

Just getting together with my family and celebrating New Years. I will also make phone calls to friends and wish them happy New Years. I am not spending my New Years by surfing the web. 2006 wasn't perfect, but it was an average year. I just hope that the year of the pig will be better.

The clubs are so expensive....I don't want to buy a new outfit...it's cold out...and I don't want to spend the whole night standing in line to get in! I'm hosting my first new year's get together. It should be interesting since I invited many friends...most of which don't hang out...So yeah, lots of interesting stories I'm sure! Happy New Year to you!!!!
