My electrician has installed the chime and checked all connections, and has the door bell on a different electrical circuit. He feels that it must be some sort of frequency that gets sent out because despite of moving the door bell to a different circuit the problem still occurs. The transformer is old and is located in the basement and has not been replaced in years. The fan dimmer switch is about 10 feet from the door bell. It appears that when the light switch is ON (its on the same face plate as the fan dimmer) I do not have the problem. Once I turn off the light and move the fan dimmer switch the door bell will play.

Thank you for taking the time to provide suggestions to addressing this problem!

It's not a radio freq. problem. The dimmer switch changes the current flow to change the amount of current flowing to the light to change the brightness.
Door bells use low voltage to operate. It is possible that the electromagnetic waves generated by the flow of electricity through the wires is inducing current flow through the door bell wiring some where or they are still on the same circuit at the distribution panel (fuse box).
Many homes have several outlets and lights in different rooms on the same circuit so that if a fuse or circuit breaker trips, you don't loose power to the whole room.

Everything electric sends out a type of radio frequency. With the light off and moving the dimmer switch it acts like a tuner dial on a radio and sends out different frequencies with the change in current to your fan. With some old dimmer switches if a radio is on in the am mode it will make a hum. I would change out the dimmer switch.
Good Luck

Your fan may be operating on a dimmer (not good) instead of a fan speed control.
This can be producing the inteference associated with the chime.
Have the electrician take the fan off the dimmer and turn it on manually (with and without the light on) and see what happens.

Sounds like you have a ghost! Go ahead and laugh, but human's are made up of energy. Think about it.
