as an educator, i believe that morals and values education should be a standard part of each day in the classroom. if our children are not exposed to morals and values at home (definitely, not ALL homes), nor taught what morals and vaules are important----it is the MORAL obligation of each school district to mandate formal classroom instruction as to these two vitally important areas.

It all begins with the parents. Parents need to not only set a better example by modeling good behavior, they need to correct their children when they see them doing something wrong. They also need to pay more attention to them, not just let them watch any TV show or movie that they want to, or go anywhere they'd like.
Schools could also help by instituting character education programs. Most already do this, but past elementary school, the programs are so dull and didactic that they are counter-productive. The programs need to be interesting, and, at the same time, more integrated with standard curriculum--like hiding a pill in jelly.
Because this education would be ethical, rather than moral, nothing would bar public schools from participating in these programs.

Go back and look at what we, the older ones (not ancient by any means) were taught.....by parents that are not out all night drinking and fighting, are trying to make a "home" for children and expect them to obey moral values and rules set down. Schools try but let them correct a child and what happens?? the parent(s) come to the schools to want to fight them for correcting their child. Its a rut some are born in, but with help maybe they can get out of it.
