Mating by Norman Rush
It's a book about a relationship between a man and a female anthropologist in a sort of trial utopian society in Africa. The catch is that he is the virtually the only man in this society. The two come from different backgrounds and have different ideas about what makes both a society and a relationship work. The writing is lush--and I learned vocabulary I never knew before, but most intriguing is simply the dialogues the two characters have and their vacillating emotions. The sheer complexity of their relationship is a testament to what hard work merely communicating with someone you love can be--and ultimately explores whether or not it's worth it...and just how much it's worth. It's ambiguous at times and definitely thought-provoking on several levels.

I wouldn't call it a romance, because it's got philosophy, etc. in it as well. Just fiction. Good fiction.

The Count of Monte Cristo. It is about a man who is falsely imprisoned for many many years who escapes, finds a treasure with the help of a map and spends a good part of the money seeking revenge on all who wronged him. So, it's essentially about revenge. It's by Alexander Dumas and is a classic. The book is very involved and can be a bit dry at times, but is well worth reading. After you have read the book, watch any or all of the many movies of the same name which are based on the book, yet differ significantly. All are worth watching.
I guess it would be either Drama or Adventure, but it has some romance in it, too. ENJOY!

Neuromancer by WIlliam Gibson.

It's about a former hacker who lost his ability to jack into the matrix (not The Matrix, which was inspired by the book; think of roaming around the Internet with your mind), turned into a street hustler and junkie, then out of the blue receives a chance to recover alas he takes on a mission of grave danger. If you are sensitive to the subtle nuances of the book, it's startling just what is trying to be accomplished in the book.

Genre is cyberpunk, a sub-genre of scifi.

I have many favorite books. I would describe a favorite book is one that you will go back to periodically and read again and again. Here are a couple of mine:

The Stand by Stephen King. A novel about a plague that leaves 94.44% of the worlds population dead. A true good vs. evil story. I love Stephen King because he really has a sense of story and character/dialogue. The characters he creates are just so real and believable.

A Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. A science fiction novel about a man who is raised by martians and comes to earth to teach humans about love.

Time Enough for Love by Robert Heinlein. Also a science fiction novel. Just wonderful storys about the tenderness of true love.

The Red Tent by Anita Diamante. A historical fiction novel about the Bible story of Dinah. Very beautiful because it tells the story from her perspective.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. A novel set in a small town in the southern United States. Told from the perspective of a little girl the story is about so many different things--black and white relations/justice, prejudice, preconceived ideas about people, etc... an all time favorite.

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. A fantasy novel about the King Arthur story told from the perpective of the women around him.

Stoned from the River by Ursela Hegi. A historical novel about a dwarf girl growing up in pre-WW2 and WW2 Germany.

Wicked by Gregory Maguire. A fantasy novel of the Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch of the West's perspective. Really explores good and evil and perspective.

Soooo many books. So little time.

i love the little prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery for it's profoundness aside from the mental and metaphysical challenges it poses. this is a classic. the story focuses on the journey of a prince that came from another planet.

i cried over the band of brothers book by stephen ambrose. this is a retelling of the easy company's journey in world war 2. it evoked the same feelings i had when i watched lotr 3- the return of the king. just like the battle on pellenor fields, the retelling of the war scences was so climatic and the sense of camaraderie was great. aside from the idea that war brings out the best and worst in man. it's a must read for me and the best non-fiction i've read.

lastly, i was rather moved by " the nutmeg" by kristin valla as it is a different take on unrequited love. it's rather a silent novel.

mystery of fear street by r.l. stine is also a great read if you happen to religiously enjoy the fear street series by the same author.

Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry. It's so much more than a western, and the made-for-TV movie with Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall nailed it.

It's about 2 cowboys and their entourage as a chapter closes in the Old West. It's about friendship and endurance. About character and change.

It's about heros, and struggle, and adventure.

I've read most of McMurtry's work, but this remains his best.

Like sum4182girl I am a Steinbeck fan. "The Pearl" or "Of Mice and Men" are tied for my favourites. I think OM&M is one of the most important pieces of American fiction from the last century: stark, mean, loving. Truly a classic. Believe it or not it is still forbidden reading in some closed circles of education. I have read it 5 or 6 times.
