They were migratory, they followed their food, apparently. Maybe the animals that they were hunting moved into Europe and they followed.

Homo erectus would enter Europe if given the opportunity such as between ice ages. Neanderthal was probably very well adapted to the cold Europe as was H. Heidelbergensis. Recent fossils from Java confirm that Homo erectus lived to at least 25,000 years ago and I wonder if some might have migrated into Europe. Certainly before 500,000 years ago there should have been plenty of opportunities. I think a better question would be why it wouldn't and the best answers there would be presence of other animal or hominid that it couldn't out compete or climate which it wasn't sufficiently adapted to. Since Heidelbergensis apparently evolved from erectus you could say that it did enter Europe, at least in an evolved form.

H. erectus was a very successful species who were able to make tools and probably could build fires. It's possible that with their tool use and increased brain power, they were better able to survive outside of Africa than their forbears. They probably migrated for the same reasons humans do- to spread out a growing population and because they could.

European H. Erectus females must have been much more kinky and with cuter shoes, as is apparent in modern day European society.
