Hello,

I am an american actor, currently residing in Hollywood, but I really love Europe, and was looking for a change. What are your thoughts of a person moving to London to pursue acting? Why does Hollywood have to be the hub? I am sick of the flaky people, and I dont want to be here for the summer. Thanks

If you're going to London for the cultural experience, and to immerse yourself in a completely different kind of lifestyle, then I think it's a great idea.

However, if you're going there to look for WORK as an actor, you had better think twice. The performing arts unions in the U.K. are just as un-welcoming to foreigners as are their U.S. counterparts. You can study there, and you can see a lot of great theatre, but you say that you're going to "pursue acting," and I don't think it's an "open shop" in that regard.

I'm in my last year at drama school and I think London is fabulous. Contrary to popular belief, the theatre here is in a really healthy state, there is always so much going on and we get loads of arts council funding unlike the US. It is a small, close knit world but it shouldn't be too hard to get your foot in the door. And I imagine it is probably less 'false' than Hollywood- it is probably more like New York, where I have worked, but you're likely to notice some differences even between these two. I don't think, however, that our film industry is so healthy, so it just depends on your priorities, and I guess you will have to check out your visa requirements etc. But I would say go for it, whatever happens it will be a great adventure, which I always believe makes you a better performer! Look forward to bumping into you!

I work in film and was recently in LA. I know exactly what you mean. I'm from London and am here now and I do prefer the work here to LA.

But although the quality of work here is higher over all, there is much less to be had and you are an American actor, which limits your possibilities even more. But for the stage London is the place to be, film is very limited and TV even more so for you in particular.

As I said, London is great for theater and there are often American plays in production (I know you shouldn't be limited to USA roles but you will be) and working in the West End is great for your resume.

Look into it as much as possible first, research what's going on and where the auditions are. Get a few great showreels put together focusing on TV, film, monologue, theater individually and start sending them off now.

The London film theater and TV world is notoriously closed-doored to outsiders but it just takes one meeting and you could get in and opportunities will come up because once you are in people look out for each other more so than LA.

Best of luck.

Then there was the Shakespearan, or the Miller? When
you decide that your life is a canvas, a real piece of artistic
endeavor then you may be ready. The Royal cannot welcome
you, your a tweedy twitter, and to boot, you have no repoir. A
real actor would thrown down the gauntlet and let all be known
that the end of train rides is eminent. Polar Expresso, anyone?
