I've seen a few misinformed answers up above.

The one that says Kurt 'invented' Grunge.
He did not, in fact. But he was the one who brought it to American Consciousness.
Grunge was actually a term coined first by Mark Arm, and what he meant was that the music was 'dirty', "grungy".
And the one that said " a genius doesn't kill himself when things are going good".
Oh man...I'm not even going to go there.

If Kurt was a 'genius', his genius was that he spoke the language of millions of young Americans who had no voice, and who at the point he came about, were so disallusioned by the meaningless (to them) factory made pop star.

Not to mention the weariness of the 80's mill.

Kurt's language WAS the language of young Americans at the time and that made his lyric's genius. Didn't it?

If one looks back on anything they once held close to themselves as a wonder, they may think to themselves why they once were so attached to it.
They may view it differently, perhaps have a laugh at themselves for it. They may cling to it still, as a relevant part of who they were and maybe still are.

There are few who come to my mind when one thinks 'everlasting', 'timeless', 'genius'...and that would be someone such as Dylan.

Kurt was an innovator, wether he chose this or not. Therefore he is timeless in his own right.

What one calls genius, another will not.
So shall we call him a genius?
If one can reach millions straight into where they think...by their language.. be it raw, simple, garbage, or otherwise, who are we to say he is not?

Many tortured people are.

His untimely death has no bearing on his genius or lack thereof.
His lyrics were old and new and real and raw and simply simple.

Both the Stones and the Beatles in their own right as well could be said to have the genius.
Look at the vast catalog of both, the longevity, the sheer impact of both on the generation.

Every so often, something phenomenal happens.
It either stays or fades away, but it is phenomenal nonetheless.
Yes?

Well I wouldn't say the lyrics were genius, but the collective talent from each of the members made the group so brilliant. I was in high school when Nirvana and the grunge movement hit and it was a much needed break from all the crappy music at the time. I definitely don't think it was garbage though, Nirvana touched too many people and has a huge potential to be seriously listened to by future generations.

I'm the same age as you and I think Cobain's lyrics are genius because they evoke feelings of the frustrated X-generation in the listener. He also started a new wave of writing style that brought about the "grunge" fad.

Genius's do NOT kill themselves when they have so much going for them. His lyrics were inspired by the PAIN that he was going through and I think the songs, Most of them, were good though genius I don't think so, not garbage either though I also like the Beatles best but without the Stones the Beatles wouldn't have had anyone to truly try to top now would they Beatles and Stones fed off of each other

Genius! Nirvana was, and still is, probably the best and most popular and famous grunge band! If not for Mr Cobain (& his lyrics), that whole era of music would probably not even be an era.
