Africa is a continent just like Europe and America. It is made of diffenent independent States just like Canada, USA, Germany or Cuba. In some African States, over 85% of the population don't even know how to spell their names. Just imagine trying to sell a condom to a person who does't have the intellectual ability to know or understand why or how it can help them.

Well yes that would be wonderful, but they have a large enough problem trying to feed, clothe, house and provide an adequate water supply. So, I think Sex Ed's going to have to take a back burner.

Actually, your numbers are off: the current literacy rate in African countries is well above 50% (Sudan 61%, in the midst of a civil war; Malawi 62%, the country most affected by AIDS; most others are like Nigeria, around 70%).

The problem has more to do with three things:
- Religion: many religions frown on using condoms; for example, Latin Americans refuse to, due to their Catholicism;
- Type of HIV: the one affecting Africa doesn't kill as fast as the type found in North America, and it makes infection from a female to a male much more likely. In North America most infections are from male-male contact; in Africa, most are from Female-Male contact.
- The immune system of Africans is different. Their white blood cells have some difference in their coating proteins that make the infection with HIV not just more likely, but also the development of AIDS more certain.
