I live ten minutes outside of Boston, Massachusetts. My only credible acting "experience" is my Theatre Arts class which I take at school. I don't want to get scammed.

It depends on the procedures in the city where you live. Ask your actor friends, familiar with acting in Boston, to give you guidance. Each city has their own procedures, you have to make sure you follow what is appropriate for actors in Boston.
