Can't afford brand new? A Toyota Matrix is less than many used SUV's.
If you're on a budget, I'd recommend you go mini-van. Style-wise, they are on the outs. That means low-resale but better values for used.

Try the Subaru Outback wagon. They're pretty economical, have the safety of all wheel drive, and have lots of room with a split folding rear seat.

We like our Subaru Forester. Check out the 2003. It's the first year of a redesign, and offers some nice options.
It's an AWL and handles nicely, plus it gets good gas milage.

I just bought a 2000 Mercedes ML320 and love it. Had to really search for a nice, low mileage, well cared for car, but I got it for 18,500, and it has all the power, luxury and safety of a Benz. With just 46,000 miles, I can drive it for at least 125,000 miles. My cousin loves her Honda CR-V. That is a great car, too.

jeep liberty - tough, affordable, well-built. not reeeal roomy, but nice cargo space and you can enlarge it if needed by dropping the back seat.
