Disease, there is a point in the brain that if you hit it you can't return about 1/10 are born with it. The cravings become overwhelming and you always end up giving in. The most interesting part of it is the only way to get sober is to become spiritual. That doesn't mean you can't stop drinking, but you will be miserable if your not spiritual.

Alcoholism is an addiction like drugs. I was a drug addict and I needed the drugs to live, or so I thought. Same goes with people who drink. They cannot get through the day without the pleasure of alcohol in their bodies. I wouldn't say it's an obsession but it's not really a disease either. However is can be hereditary.

Alcoholism: behavior label for a human being that drinks to cover up problems instead of dealing with them.

"keep in mind that a person can never become an alcoholic if they never start drinking in the first place."
Only true for an individual who chooses to use alcohol to run away from a specific problem the individual is choosing not to deal with. If one has a drink at a wedding to toast the bride/groom or on New years etc it does not equal someone running away from their problems.

Yes you can have FAS - Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. These people are like crack babies - dependent on the substance.

For the average person with an addictive nature and a pallet for spirits, they may become obsessed and develop a dependency.

An addiction (whether psychological or chemical) is not considered a disease as far as I know, unless more clinically described as a disease of the mind perhaps.

I think most obsessions and addictions develop psychological diseases and often chemical dependency.

Good question. My opinion is it first is an obsession that turns into a disease. My ex was a drinker/partier and I didn't think anything of it, we were young. Then we moved in together & he started (or I started noticing) him drinking as he said "only" or "just" a shot to mellow him out for work that day. At 7 in the morning! Then he was going to lunch & having a drink too. Then it he quit his job (good paying job w/awesome benefits) so he can drink. Then he realized he was an alcoholic, cause he couldn't control it anymore & had to stop (of course, I kicked him out & broke up with him first to notice this). So first is causual/social drinking, then a little more, then losing selfcontrol & turning into a disease.

Yes, BUT! they started drinking to escape problems, of whatever nature. And got hooked on the feeling! It's a habit, for some, obsession, for others, like my dad, it's an escape from his OWN FEELINGS! He can be sober, at times, and drive and do things normally, but then, he settles into that drinking MODE! Just has to have it, plain and simple, and we all have to suffer for it! So, I guess you could say that it doesn't really matter if it's disease or obsession, it does the damage in the very same way!

Hm i believe that its a bit of both, a very bad obsession IS a disease, everyone (near enough) has tried at least one drink in their life, its a shame that some people have an illess that prevents them from having a few and havinga laugh because they just cannot stop.

The reason why people have any addiction at all is to escape their true identity. We are not these bodies, ie; race, color, religion, nationality, job, intellect, senses, etc. We are eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul also known as Krishna,Allah, Vishnu, Jehovah, etc. This world is not our real home, it is called Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery. People are miserable because they are not tasting the bliss of the pure living entity because they do not know who they are. The quickest and easiest way to get out of illusion and transcend all addictions is to chant the Maha Mantra (the great mantra for deliverance from illusion and suffering. go to krishnaculture. for complete details- read Bhagavad Gita As it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada and to stephen-knapp. for Universal Truths. We are all in a diseased condition unless we come our constitutional position.

For most people, moderate alcohol consumption poses little danger of addiction. Other factors must exist for alcohol use to develop into alcoholism.

The chronic alcohol consumption caused by alcoholism can result in psychological and physiological disorders.

Each type of addiction must be treated individually for an alcoholic to fully recover.
