This is actually very normal. Most MP3 players don't require Formatting. They do however usually require a driver to be installed on your PC. This driver should have come with the player on a CD or floppy, depending on who makes your player.
Check the directions that came with the player, or look for the driver on the web site of the company that makes your player. In most cases this driver simply makes your player "Look" like a disk drive. You just copy your MP3's to this "Drive" and that's it. Since the player is being filtered through the driver, then there is no need to format it.
Some Players with internal disk drives are only formatted through the players firmware. In the case of the creative Zen Vision's, you have to press and hold the reset button as you turn it on. This displays the maintenance menu allowing you to format the drive. Again, check the manual that came with the player, or the manufacturers support web site.

Go to control panel, Administrative tools, computer management and choose disk management in the left hand column. This will list all the connected drives and you may be able to format the mp3 player here.
There may be necessary files on the mp3 player that you would lose in doing this so I take no responsibilty if you knacker it
