I am the tenant on the 2nd story of a duplex. There is a lot of ice on the stairs. The lease stipulates that I am in charge of keeping the stairs secure. Should the landlord pay for the salt?

The lease stipulates that you are in charge, of the stairs, the salt, and applying it..If he falls, by the terms of the lease you describe, he could sue you..Be careful what you sign..........

If the conditions of the lease state that you're responsible for keeping the stairs secure, I would imagine that you would have to purchase the salt. In my eyes, it would be an expense necessary to fulfill the lease.

Yes. The landlord owns the house, not you and he/she is responsible for the tenant's safely. If you buy the salt yourself, keep the receipts and give them to your landlord or else ask him/her if you can deduct the cost of the salt from your rent. I'm sure your landlord would not want you or your guest to fall and sustain an injury.

Yes, it is the landlords responsibility to pay for salt. If someone slips and falls because of no salt, they can't sue you as the tenant. They would sue the landlord.

if the lease says that you are responsible for keeping the stairs secure then you have to pay for it. from the sounds of it your lease is really messed up though. i would check to see what it defines as secure.
