Religion describes the structural guidelines you follow...such as being Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, etc. Spirituality describes your own personal relationship with God through prayer and worship.

Religion is an institutional structure to formally recognize and support a spiritual belief system. Spirituality is the essence of religion, it's a personal belief system. Spirituality is the water and religion is the ground around it that makes it form a lake. Some people are very spiritual but don't follow an organized religion; some people are very religious but don't understand or practice the spiritual essence of their religion; some people are both, and some are neither.

Religious means you pick a religion and follow all the rules and beliefs that come along with it. When someone says they are more spiritual than religious, they mean that they believe in God and talk to God, they just haven't found a specific religion that they completely agree with. There is a difference, just not a specific line separating the two. Religious people are spiritual but not all spiritual people are religious. Hope that helps.

Religion is conforming to a certain set of beliefs while spirituality is a wider range of things you believe in that don't conform to any specific rules.
