It has the sun damage only on the top of the SUV and a little over half of the paint is gone. My question is if I should use fine grit sandpaper and remove the rest of the top coat of paint and then spraypaint the top with automotive paint when I'm finished.

If there is no other damage you defineatly need to get some coverage up there.

This is abnout the only time I would suggest these guys.
Maaco will do just the top. you don't have to do the whole car.
They will prep the top and paint it. Pretty cheap and it looks good too. As long as they don't have to do much masking and body work, anyone with a little talent can paint good.
Now if you have your own sprayer you could do that too. but I wouldn't use the spray can touch up as that is cheap paint and will burn off in the hot sun.

Yes, that will work - the only difficulty will be that it's going to be tough to blend the spray paint into the original paint. But even a rattle-can fix like that will look better than baked-off paint.

You could do that, light sand the area and then primer it and tack dust it off, and in warm weather repaint it yourself with some Duplicolor if you want to be cheap about it, or take it to Macco for a half price paint job in the same color for around 300 bucks.

Go to you local parts store. You should be able to get a product to help bring out the color. I used NuFinish on a old 64 Chevy pickup with faded paint and it brought it back like new.
