Your fist held out at arm's length is about 10 degrees wide. So 4 and a half that distance is 45 degrees.
Or, 90 degrees is the zenith, which is the point directly overhead or straight up. 45 degrees is half way from the horizon to the zenith.

Your hand held and arm's distance and your fingers spread out is 25 degrees and then your hand held in a fist at arms distance is 10 degrees. One 25 degrees and two 10 degrees make one 45 degrees.

Hold one arm straight up and point to the sky. Hold the other straight out and point to the horizon. 45 degrees is halfway between the two, pointing up at an angle. This is true regardless of where you live.
