the culture teaches you that fullfilment comes from being extraverted, materialistic, and, generally, "rich and famous". and, that being introspective, calm, quiet, non aggressive and not ruthlessly ambitious, and enjoying "just being" is almost sinful (and, probably, unchristian?). this is helpful, since, if somewhat insightful, a person learns that whatever is mainstream, beyond eating and breathing, is pretty much always180 degrees off course ;-)
