Ok, so, there has been this clunking sound coming from the hard drive for a while now (atleast half a year or more), usually when I start up and once or twice at night. It is occasional.

Now, before anyone starts screaming HDD failure, this has been happening pretty long and no signs of failure yet. What is the problem?

Yesterday, I installed Lavasoft Pro and the clunking came irregular in short intervals but that was the only time it happened. This hard drive is pretty old (been through two builds).

Babe19 - Of course it isn't something regarding the fan. Otherwise, it would happen regularly. If the molex bumps into it, assuming the fan is strong enough to force it back, then it would come back in regular intervals.

If it was strong enough to always keep it back with air, then it would make a noise as soon as I start up which also isn't the case. So no - fans aren't an issue.

Philip T - I realize that but I'm saying what could be wrong with the HDD. I realize those are the moving parts, and by a process of elimination, the HDD is the only one that I am not sure is the problem.

babe19 is giving you the best advice ....

The only moving parts in a PC are:

Hard Drives
CD/DVD Drives
Floppy Drives
&
Fans

( shhhhh ..... imminent hard disk failure )

might be working now, might work for a little while longer but if the noise is coming from the HDD then it will most likely fail sooner or later. Have you run diagnostic tools from the manufacturer for your HDD? If not i would recommend doing so. List of links can be found from the source listed below.

Also, I would perform a defrag and then run Scandisk and do a complete surface scan to check for bad sectors.
