I have seen many movies(Gone With the Wind, Crossroads) and TV shows (Desperate Housewives) that show pregnant women (sometime in their first trimester) fall down stairs and loose their babies. Could this really happen? How?

Potentially, yes, but the baby is a lot more cushioned than they make it appear to be. I know this only because I am pregnant and got all paranoid one night after an episode of Grey's Anatomy where a baby dies after the mom falls in the shower, and my doctor essentially laughed at me and told me that was very unlikely.

It was an old wives' tale in England that too much strenuous exercise could cause a miscarriage, too. The joke was that those English girls who found out they were pregnant would suddenly take up bicycling and go for long rides in the country every day.

In a recent episode of General Hospital, a doctor mentioned that Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) had lost her baby last year after trauma, due to a "separated placenta". At least they're trying to give a plausible explanation; when the placenta is ripped out of the uterine wall - usually by strong trauma - the baby can die from lack of nutrients. The placenta digs into the wall of the uterus to exchange nutrients and waste byproducts with the mother's body. Not sure if that brings on labour, though.

Yes! I It definetley could happen. While there is a lot of protection around the baby a sever fall could cause major problems and eventually lead to loosing the baby. Same thing with car accidents, etc.

But, I herd of a couple ladies fighting (1 pregnant & 1 faking) that kept getting thorwn on their stomachs and the lady who was really pregnant came out okay (Oprah)!

Yes. A lot of times falling down stairs or other objects could result in a miscarrige. That is what happens when the fetus becomes separated from the certain area of the woman's reproductive system, in which the baby can survive. But during a miscarriage, of course, the baby passes away.

Yes pregnant women can loose the baby. especially if they land on the stomach.it can crush the unborn child or cause serve damage, bleeding w/ pain is the first sign of major trouble. I feel down the stairs when I was pregnant with my daughter and landed on all fours (Like a cat) so was very lucky. My doctors had me get bed rest for 48 hours took Tylenol for pain and slept all day.

I fell down and fractured my right leg when I was 6 months pregnant. Nothing happened to the baby, but I had a cast on my leg during the reminder of my pregnancy. The doctor took off the cast one week before giving birth. My baby is going to be 11 yrs in January.

this kinda makes me laugh, not in a bad way but because i fell down the stairs when i was 7 months pregnant. i think its very possible that the baby could get hurt or die if the woman fell really hard or the wrong way kind of like gettin punched in the stomach...i fell...got some rug burn and then laughed at myself. just be careful more than anything :)

It could happen if the woman falls hard enough. the fall could disturb the embryo and cause it to die therefor causing the woman to loose her baby.
