Traditionally people go with the salt regeneration softeners. Today, however things are changing. There are saltless water softeners on the market that work very well, and don't have the hassle of buying salt and hauling it around. A little bird also told me that an engineer in Germany has come out with a media that requires no salt and no electricity that softens the water. This is not on the market yet, but will be soon. My advice is to do an internet search for "saltless water softeners", and when considering purchasing ask as many questions as possible.

I like my Rayne system, it works on potassium instead of salt. It is one space saving unit, it is energy efficient, I use a lot less detergent in my dishwasher and washing machine and my plants love it. It also came with a lifetime warranty which came in very handy when my pressure regulator blew because they replaced a very expensive part that was damaged as a result. Plus, it is hassel free operation. They programmed it 9 years ago when they put it in and again when they replaced the storage container, but I've never had to do anything else.

I've owned other units in my other houses (GE, Culligan, Sears, LifeSource), but none lasted as long as this one or was as good.
