Even though both are out with injuries right now, Yao would dominate Shaq. He has had the edge over Shaq for awhile now, and while Shaq gets older and slower, Yao continues to improve in every category. Not to mention, Yao is nicer.

At this very moment it would be Yao who has better numbers and is dominating the game more. If we are talking in their prime (SO FAR or the first 3-4 years) it would be Shaq. But Yao has probably not hit his prime yet which can scare every player and coach out there who is reading this. Shaq has been more dominant most his career up until the last couple years. Yao is a much harder worker and has improved incredibly! I am amazed and shaking my head for what he has done this year. I did not know he would be this good even though he was probably expected to be. As good as Shaq was he never got much better at his free-throws and he was never the great rebounder he could have been for his 7-1 size. Phil Jackson recently quoted out of all the great players he ever coached Shaq was the most difficult to make work. Shaq dominated but everybody knows he could have been a ton better if he wanted to be. Yao is getting better all the time and has had vast improvements about every year. Who knows how good Yao is going to be! The man is still in the making and is having an unbelieveable year. The simularities is both can be better defenders. I think Yao should block more shots than he does at how tall he is. Shaq was a better shot blocker in his prime and rebonder also. Yao has yet to his his prime unless he is in his prime now. I believe Yao will be the most dominant center in the NBA for the next few years because Shaq is past his prime now. And Shaq probably won't play much longer. The now part of this question is Yao but overall career will have to be Shaq until Yao makes his impact which he has not yet or even in the baby steps of his years which don't compare to Shaq. As far as skills go and potiential I would rather have Yao on my team. But Yao needs another superstar to play with and if McGrady won't step up Houston will need someone else to win 4 championship rings or a really good younger supporting cast since old age slowed them down a couple years ago.

Shaq is a greatest this is a stupid question SHAQ changed the game!! Shaq is unstoppable. Shaq is a Force in the middle Yao is just tall. SHaq is Powerful. Yao IS weak. Shaq break Backboards and rims. Yao breaks his fingernails on the net lol!! Shaq has 4 rings and could he could had 6 if they just gave him the ball more. Shaq is just so much better than Yao. When are people goin to realize Shaq is best center ever besides wilt and bill Period!!. Shaq is that man!! Shaq is the guy u get if u want to win. If you are talking about career or skill then I'd go for Shaq.
But right now, it's Yao.

Yao is much better. He has all of the stats to prove it too. he averages more points, rebounds, and blocks. Yao is the better down low player then shaq can ever be
