A hillbilly lives in the hills. A redneck SHOULD be living in the hills, but are instead living in a more urban setting.

I think hillbilly is a matter of location and class (and maybe educational level), and redneck is a matter of attitude with a little location thrown in.

A hillbilly lives in the hill or mountain area of the American South (and maybe the American West), and is usually poor and has little education. A redneck is a white bigot and racist, usually from the South, whose name comes from a neck red with anger. You can have millions of dollars in your pocket and still be a redneck. You can come from Atlanta or Memphis or New Orleans or any Southern urban area and still be a redneck. You can have a Ph.D. and still be a redneck.
