I've had both ... after a few paps ... you'll get use to it ... the male doctors are usually more gentle than the females ( at least in my experience - they seemed a little more caring - they really do try to make you feel comfortable ) ... you usually have the choice if you want a male or female ... either way you'll have a nurse in the room with you just in case ... nothing to be shy about ... they're just doing their job ... think of it that way and you won't have any problems ... !

I suggest you look up your gynecologist by who your insurance covers first. This way you know you're not going to be spending money out of your own pocket except the coverage fee which is anywhere from 15-30 bucks. That may sound like a lot at first but its saving you tons.
Also ask your girlfriends who they reccomend. You might get someone who is very experienced in the practice and she may be a female but she might not treat you like another human being. You want someone who is going to treat you with respect if you're paying her. That doesn't mean you get to walk all over your doctor because a doctor can say "Find someone else to look in your vagina" maybe not those terms exactly but they may tell you to get lost in their own words.
If you don't have a lot of female friends who go to those kinds of doctors get advice from your mom or female cousin or aunt about who to see.
Also when you "interview" your doctor you don't have to check to see if it is a female or male doctor you want to make sure they know what they are doing. You don't want a female doctor who has a vagina so she thinks she's qualified. You want a doctor who has had some training and some qualifications.
Heres an extra tip:
Don't be embarassed or shy around a male gynecologist. They know what they're doing too and they aren't looking at your vagina in a sexual way. They think of it as something that needs to be cared for and looked at in a professional manner. Many male doctors are married or have a girlfriend. Some are even gay. They have also seen many a vagina in their lives and there is no reason to be concerned that he will think anything of your vagina. He won't think its ugly or smelly or the wrong shape. He's thinking about its health.
You can request a female doctor if you'd prefer. I am just showing you some options.
When you go to the hospital to have your arm looked at or your heart you don't care about whether the doctor is a female or a male do you? Do you know why? Because the doctor has seen thousands of hearts and arms and only wants to make you better.
Males may not have our feelings and experience our pains and problems but these specific males are trained thoroughly in the field of the female problems. They have many reasons for wanting to be a gynecologist. Their "motive" was to help women. Maybe they had a mother or grandmother who died of something that could have been prevented had their mother or grandmother seen a gynecologist.
So no they don't have to have a sexual motive to want to help women feel better.
Just think about that. And good luck chosing the gynecologist for you!

There are men and women gynecologists so you can call and ask to make an appointment with a female gynecologists. I would much rather have a female doctor also because I feel that a woman doctor is more understanding than a male doctor.

Actually I do have a woman for my gynecologist, because of the fact they can actually know what you are talking about. Think of it this way do men have female problems? No... so I just like to go to a woman because she can relate to us women and know when we say we are cramping etc and what to do about it. Guys don't get the funny discharges etc that some women get. It is ok to have a man, but in my experiences I prefer a woman. You can talk openly with her once you get to know her and feel comfortable asking questions because as a young girl you need to be able to ask before you find things out the hard way. Good luck and I hope you find what your looking for.

When you call for your appointment, specifically request a female gynecologist. If a woman does not work at that office, find one that does. A lot of people feel more comfortable with a female doctor, so don't feel like you are asking for something unusual or different. Good luck to you!

Good gynecologists are mindful of this problem. I suggest calling ahead to the clinic and ask which doctors work there. My wife says you can request a female gynecologist over a male one and many clinics won't have a problem with it.
If you can't arrange this, I wouldn't worry about it. These people are professionals and they won't do anything to embarrass you. Just try to remember that regardless of the doctor's gender, they do this every day and don't think of it in any kind of a sexual way.

male gynecologist's are the same as females but i would also DEFIANTLY get a female too=). Male Gynecologist's are professionals and they are just doing their jobs, they went to school for years and are mature enough or they would not be in the job they are in. Look for a female first because you will feel more comfortable but if you can not find one go with the male either way you will get the same result, but comfort first=)
I Hope u can find one

Most offices have both males and females to exam you. It is up to you who you would like a male or female. When you make an appointment just make sure you request a female doctor and they will be sure to schedule with a female doctor. I was the very same way and have made sure I have a female doctor each time especially when you move and have to find a new doctor.

I had a male doctor my entire life until the day he asked me if i was "regular"
I moved to a female doctor right away, while my family still stayed with the male.
It's very easy to find a female gyno if you're uneasy with a male like I was. Call your city and ask for a list of female doctors in your area.

There are woman gynecologists, as well as men. Just find a woman in your area and make an appointment with her.
