An ultrasound mechinism uses high frequency sound waves to visualize and measure objects we can't see with the naked eye. Commonly used in the medical field for "seeing" behind the skin to observe what is there for medical diagnosis or to monitor a pregnancy.
The device generates and expels these sound waves, while at the same time collects the waves sent and reflected back for analysis. Different tissues reflect the waves differently to define what is being observed, and the measurement of the time it takes for the reflected sound to return indicates the depth of the item or tissue.

it is like an x-ray only without the radiation. The scope bounces off fluid like sonar and shows images from within the body. Totally painless and messy because they rub a gooey stuff on the skin to make the scope move easier.
