"Red Neck" is a term used for white Americans in smaller towns or rural areas that are usually poor or lower middle class. The term "red neck" is from when these people would work outside and would get sunburn on their necks. This usage usually assumes the individual referred to lacks education and/or is prejudiced.

It has become more common among liberals to label any conservative individuals, regardless of socio-economic background and education level.

Most definitely NOT, red neck was originally used as derogatory term to refer to rural, mostly Southern, people who spent most of their time working in the sun, sun- and or wind-burning the back of their necks. Now days, it is a term used with pride by those who wish celebrate their Southern heritage and culture.

Originally it simply meant a poor southern white farmer whose neck was literally red because he spent all day under the hot sun.

Nowadays it refers to a certain type of people in America who are uneducated, dirt-poor, uncultured, ugly, and inbred.
