as a biker, i can understand to a point about inattentive cagers drifting over into their lane, but it's a 2 way street, and accidents usually require 2 participants.
it's been shown over and over that: cars are much better sound insulated than they used to be, drivers tend to be doing more things to distract themselves; cell phones(#1 reason). and the biggest thing that goes against the 'loud pipes save lives' argument is, the pipes face the wrong way: not facing traffic.
another thing about straight pipes, and it's been proven consistently on the dynometer: straight pipes hurt torque, power and performance in the range of typical street riding: 3500 rpm's and lower. the straight pipes dont even wake the motor up until the rpm's are in the 4000 and up range. their actually intended for full throttle applications like racing, and just how often do regular street riders even break the 4000 rpm 'barrier'? i dont even go over 3500 rpm at 65, and my bike is all stock.
i've been hearing that alot of places are cracking down hard on bikes with modified exhaust. close to where i live, there's a few towns that strictly enforces the noise ordanances, and 1 bro that rides got tagged a couple yrs ago for having straight pipes. i hear that daytona beach is going to be hardcore on too loud of pipes soon enough.
only thing that will keep a bike and a cage from tangling is if the rider pays attention and actually uses his eyes. seems that there's alot of riders that put too much faith in loud pipes. loud pipes isnt gonna make the bike swerve, and their not going to put the brakes on either. i dont rely on loud pipes, and i dont rely on 'dumb luck'...eventually, 'luck' runs out.
no rider should be on the road if they cant keep their head on a swivel, be able to accurately track 'targets' in a 360 degree arc, and accept the fact that they have to keep 1 step ahead of the cagers to survive the ride.
LOUD PIPES=LOSE RIGHTS

The MC police in my burg ride Road Kings with louder pipes than I have on my Electraglide. Do ya think maybe there is some truth to the loud pipes save lives saying? Just like they're trained to ride faster than the flow of traffic to keep the hazards in front of them.

No. Thet don't laugh at me, and they don't write me tickets. The rest of your page is just rant. Ask or answer. Lecture in a hall. I know what people say when I go by. And the Troopers point me out to each other not because of how my bike sounds, but how it looks. Especially with the custom pipes.

OK so we agree here on Yahoo Answers that "SMOKEY" is not a "REAL BIKER" you are probably just some crotch rocket riding pantie waste. That found another way to crack on Harley Riders.
I like my loud pipes, I like the way the sound, I like all the attention it brings. And yes it is a contest whoever has the loudest pipes win. Cheapy exhaust are you kidding, my exhaust cost over $1000 for my Harley. And not only don't care what you think about my loud pipes, I don't give a rats *** what anybody else thinks neither.
Like I tell all of you "TOUGH GUY BIKERS" just stop by a event where you see some Harley Riding Club members and tell them face to face what you think about their pipes and their Harley's. I'm sure they would like to discuss it with you.

What makes you think you're a "real" biker? I've been ridin' for over 40yrs. & when I started, riders pretty much knew each other because there weren't that many of us. We all rode American or British because there wasn't any other choice & I'll still die before I put my butt on some piece of junk from the fine people that brought us Pearl Harbor. You must live in a convent, I don't know where you get off speakin' for the" rest of us", unless you've got a tapeworm or are a dual personality. When you build your own ride from the ground up & have done so for 4 decades, that pretty much gives me the right to call myself a rider & speak for myself, not " all REAL bikers". You don't speak for me or the brothers I ride with, all of whom probably put more miles on two wheels in one riding season than most people put on their cars in 10 yrs.

Which side do you want me to argue? I was passing a truck and he started coming into my lane. I hit the throttle and he looked in the mirror and saw me and moved back over. so YES, LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES!
On the other hand, I agree, too many of my fellow riders are making a nuisance (wrong place and wrong time). I personally like the sound and yes, its fun! Let's educate our fellow riders AND THE PUBLIC so that its not ruined for our kids.

when I get home at 2am I want to be as quiet as possible. On the BSA I used to cut the engine at the end of the street and coast in neutral.

Let's see I've been riding for more than 30 years, and have never received a ticket because of my straight pipes. So what the hell are you talking about?
What is loud to you? My pipes set off car alarms but I don't think they are to loud.
I know, I bet you ride one of those little scooters. Boy! a scooter is not a motorcycle.

Honey, a "real biker" wouldn't feel the need to call him/herself that because they'd know that loudness or quietness of pipes doesn't a 'real biker' make. Just like someone bragging about their sexual prowess...if they really had any, they wouldn't have to brag about it.
I'd much rather be heard and annoy someone for a few seconds, than get run off the road by someone who didn't know I was there because they couldn't see or hear me.
To each their own...your preference for quiet doesn't make you a better biker or person than those that choose to be heard.

What's the matter Smokey scared to put straight pipes on your moped? If you don't like our bikes with straight pipes stick your fingers in your ears, believe you won't look no stupider then you look right now!! As for machoism,we build our bikes for us because it's what we want, seem's you're the only one that has to compensate for his manhood.
GROW UP LITTLE SMOKEY AND ONE DAY YOU CAN CALL YOURSELF A REAL BIKER!!!
Remember what they say "$15,000 & 15 miles DON'T MAKE YOU A REAL BIKER!!!!
